The paint palette of the Old World masters consisted of earth colors created from pigments of natural compounds blended with linseed oil in their workshops. This group of pigments, which has its origins in cave painting and antiquity, was central to the oil painter’s palette from the Renaissance through the Classical Era up until the first half of the nineteenth century. The result was a limited palette of muted beauties.
My OLD WORLD DYE PALETTE is inspired by the paint palettes used by Old World artists like Leonardo da Vinci and Rembrant, which featured vermillion, ochre, and indigo.
As you scroll down to the bottom of this page, all of the extraordinary colors pictured are made from various combinations of three dyes that I created to reproduce their color palette: VERMILLION SCARLET, OCHRE GOLD, and INDIGO BLUE dyes. These Palette Dyes™ are available at my webstore.

for OLD WORLD palette
My Dye Smart™ system can be visualized simply by finding a color on the SMART DYE CHART that you want to dye. Trace the vertical column to the top and the horizontal row to the left and note the two numbers. These numbers refer to the numbers printed on 12 recipe cards available at my online shop. Simply measure the dyes listed on both recipe cards into a liquid cup measure. Dissolve in 1 cup of boiling water. And voila! You have created a cup of dye solution in the color you selected. Use it to dye a yard of wool in whatever technique you choose.
