After the Industrial Revolution, a new range of pigments were made by fusing inorganic materials, such as cadmium, cobalt, and chromium, together at very high heat, brightening colors and widening the painters’ palettes. For the first time in history, painters had the pigments available to capture all of the colors of the natural world, and Impressionism was born. Painters became fascinated with bright pure color.

My VAN GOGH PALETTE is inspired by the paint palette used by Vincent Van Gogh and other artists in this period, which featured alizarin, cadmium, and ultramarine. As you scroll down to the bottom of this page, all of the extraordinary colors pictured are made from various combinations of three dyes that I created to reproduce his color palette: ALIZARIN RED, CADMIUM YELLOW, and ULTRAMARINE BLUE dyes.

My Dye Smart system can be visualized simply by finding a color on the DYE SMART CHART that you want to dye. Trace the vertical column to the top and the horizontal row to the left and note the two numbers. These numbers refer to the numbers printed on 12 recipe cards available at my online shop. Simply measure the dyes listed on both recipe cards into a liquid cup measure. Dissolve in 1 cup of boiling water. And voila! You have created a cup of dye solution in the color you selected. Use it to dye a yard of wool in whatever technique you choose.

The samples below were photographed in natural light, so the dyed fiber may appear darker in an indoor setting than the photo sample.

Colors may vary.

The photographs of the colors are a representation of the actual dye. Colors also may vary due to your computer settings and dyeing method and procedures. I recommend dyeing a sample of the color before beginning a project that requires an exact color match.
